A native Kansan, Dr. Denise Lo
w is a practicing poet, editor, publisher, library discussion leader, professor, reviewer, critic, and essayist who has dedicated herself to the literary arts for over 25 years. She is an inspirational teacher, bringing the personal art form of poetry into the context of an audience through public readings, reviews, articles and commentary. Her work acknowledges the importance of verse to call forth the best parts of the human spirit, empowering others to reflect and participate rather than spectate.
Dr. Low is the interim dean of College of Humanities and Arts at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas, where she has taught for over 20 years. She holds bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in English from the University of Kansas and an M.F.A. in creative writing from Wichita State University. An author of books, articles and reviews about poetry and American-Indian literature, Dr. Low has received awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Lannan Foundation, the Kansas Arts Commission and the Poetry Society of America among others. She has been recognized by the Kansas Humanities Council, the Academy of American Poets and the Newberry
