I am thrilled to share great news: the Kansas Poet Laureate program has a new home: the Kansas Humanities Council. This is a perfect home for the poet laureate program to continue and grow, building on the wide-reaching programming and visionary community building of KHC.
For 17 months since the Kansas Arts Commission lost its staff and funding, I’ve basically carried the program in my pocket, and as many of you know, I’ve been working to keep the program alive and help anchor it in a strong organization. It took a while to work out the transition because it’s hard to find clarity during a time of great change. But here we are: the poet laureate program lives on to sing in a new day.
What’s next? KHC has a committee meeting in November to plan what’s next, I’ll be continuing in this position for about six more months, and I’ll be sharing plans of what’s head in the remainder of my term soon. But for now, let us pause to leap off the couch, lift our arms to the brilliant Kansas sky, and dance like no one is watching.
