Trying to Remember What We’re Supposed To Be Talking About: Everyday Magic, Day 591

Updated: Oct 16, 2023

Caryn: Ken, I have something important to tell you that happened today, but I can’t remember what it is.

Ken: Was it about your book?

Caryn: No, and it wasn’t about the kids either. As it happened, I thought to myself, “I have to tell Ken about this,” but now I can’t remember.

Ken: Well, when you remember, let me know.

20 minutes later, in car with dog in passenger seat, going to Checkers to fill jugs of water and get bananas, I remember and try to call Ken, but he doesn’t answer his phone, which he forgot in his car. I get the bananas, remember to buy some peanut butter and jelly for our vacation and a few other things, but forget to fill the water jugs. Back home 15 minutes later:

Caryn: I tried to call you, but you didn’t have your phone.

Ken: Where is it?

He goes to look for phone, and I get distracted doing something else and forget to tell him what I remembered. Two hours pass.

Caryn: Ken, I just remembered that I forgot to tell you what I had forgotten earlier, but I couldn’t reach you when I called from town because you didn’t have your $&%# phone on you.

Ken: Wait, I’m brushing my teeth.

Caryn: What if I forget it again?

Ken: Don’t forget it.

Caryn: (yelling toward bathroom) Is this what the rest of our lives will be like, forgetting to tell each other things for hours? Will we be driving ourselves crazy trying to remember things and then forgetting to tell each other? I mean, we’re just in our 50s now. What will we be like in our 80s?

Ken: I can’t hear you. What did you say?

Caryn: I forgot.
